Danny started his military journey in January 2000 when he went to Harrogate Army Foundation College, joining his regiment The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment after passing out. He saw service in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and N.I and gaining his corporal stripes before completing selection for the Special Reconnaissance Regiment in 2009. We first noticed a change in him after his 2nd overseas tour when home on leave. He could not sleep and there were uncharacteristic bursts of aggression though he carried on being a popular, funny and sociable friend to his many acquaintances, who he always kept in touch with when home on leave. He was always itching to get back to the action and the army truly was his life. Due to his sleep problems he started self-medicating with alcohol and sleeping pills while on leave which eventually saw him being discharged late in 2013….this destroyed him! He worked in security and travelled the world after leaving but continued to try and re-enlist for several years until he was told he would never be accepted back into the military. We begged him to get professional help for his sleep and drink problems but he was adamant he could not have anything on his medical records that would jeopardise his career and over time his mental health deteriorated until he could take no more. Danny went missing on the 20th May 2018 and his body was found in a lonely wood a few miles from his home on the 23rd. A light went out of our lives that day. He lived for the army but it also destroyed him….had he been able to get help whilst in the army and after, things may have been very different. Danny was greatly loved by his family and a huge circle of friends and ex colleagues and our lives are poorer for having lost him. We miss you Danny.
